What makes it recognizable is its pyramid shape. When the emperor returned to Valençay after his unsuccessful expedition in Egypt, he saw the pyramid cheese, and, in a fit of rage drew his sword and cut off the top. Since then the cheese has always been shaped with a flattened top.
